What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a system of gentle yet powerful soft tissue manipulations on the following structures of the body
– muscle & fascia
– tendons, ligaments & joints
– nerves & lymphatic areas
The practitioner uses only their fingers and thumbs and keeps pressure to a minimum. This prompts the body to reset, repair & realign itself. Bowen also restores the body’s self-healing mechanism. It is pain free & deeply relaxing.
How does something that sounds so gentle work so well?
Imagine standing on a lake shore on a still day. You gently throw a small stone as far as you can. Eventually, the ripples in the water would reach your feet.
Likewise, the Bowen therapist gently touches specific points on the muscles to send a message to the nervous system. That message sends a ripple to the brain, which bounces back a message to the muscle that it is safe to rest completely. When muscles rest, they can allow the connective tissue and bones to realign. After all, muscle moves bone.
Bowen therapy can help with:
- musculo-skeletal injuries
- back pain and sciatic pain
- digestive issues
- respiratory issues
- emotional stress
- pain from arthritis
- neck and shoulder pain
What does a typical session look like?
We always begin with a quick chat to see where you are, where you want to be, and where you were. This gives me a sense of what work needs to be done. Next you lie down on a table, fully clothed, and get comfortable. I will perform a few gentle moves, then give you a couple of minutes for your body to make sense of those moves. Don’t worry! All you have to do is rest. So that you can rest fully and without disturbance, I leave the room. I come back for a few more moves, then leave you again. And we repeat until all the moves necessary for that day’s session are complete – usually taking no more than 1 hour.
Some people sit up feeling a tremendous improvement. Some people’s bodies need a few days to figure out how to incorporate this new idea of wellness.
How often should I have Bowen Therapy?
As with all new physical therapies, having frequent sessions at the beginning gives the fastest relief. The ideal situation is to commit to 4 sessions in 4 weeks, then start spreading them out as your body requires. Maintenance sessions can be scheduled monthly.
It is my goal to get you feeling your best, not have you dependent on me. The biggest compliment you can give me is to feel so good that you don’t need to see me often.
